In Brazil, local native populations living in the Amazon region have struggled to maintain their livelihoods as forestland is cleared for natural resource extraction. Grupo Orsa, one of the most important Brazilian group on the pulp, paper and packaging market, is trying to reinvigorate local trade opportunities that preserve the Amazon forest and provide income-generating opportunities for local communities. Through its commitment to the Business Call to Action, Grupo Orsa is expanding a Brazil nut processing initiative that will create 600 new jobs and double the earning potential for up to 2,000 native families in the Amazon.

Through Ouro Verde, Grupo Orsa seeks to promote a more efficient Brazil nut value chain in the Amazon by providing training to 3,000 small farmers and indigenous people on environmentally sustainable Brazil nut growing and harvesting practices. The firm will also develop storage facilities in villages to ensure local communities receive a premium price for high quality Brazil Nuts. By investing in these communities, Grupo Orsa hopes to improve exports of Brazil nuts and Brazil nut products.

The results of the commitment will include the creation of 600 new jobs, increased income for 2,000 indigenous families, and a quadrupling in the annual sales of Brazil nuts.
