The Impact Goal

PT East West Seed Indonesia (EWINDO) joined Business Call to Action in 2016 with a commitment to integrate 17,775 seeds growers into its value chain and transfer technical knowledge to 125,000 smallholder vegetable farmers by 2020.

In 2021, EWINDO renewed its membership with a commitment to deliver technical knowledge and smart-seeds farm advice to 32,959 seed grower partners in Indonesia by 2024.

The Market Gap

Agriculture plays a crucial role in the Indonesian economy, with Southeast Asia representing a large market for vegetables and other food products. Approximately 2.29 million people work in the horticulture sector alone, yet most of Indonesia's farmers are smallholders who lack both technical knowledge and access to seed varieties sought after in the Asian market. Without adequate seeds or knowledge about how and when to plant, smallholder farmers cannot participate in this lucrative market and remain trapped in a cycle of poverty.

The Business Solution

Believing high-quality seeds improve farmers’ income and increase vegetable consumption, EWINDO primarily develops local, cutting-edge seeds that produce high-quality vegetable. It also provides technical investment assistance to seed growing partners to increase the production of high-quality seeds through the adoption of better cultivation techniques along with protected production facilities. Due to this business model, EWINDO ensured that the product availability was guaranteed, and the income of seed growers were increased.

EWINDO has also been actively engaged in the transfer of technical knowledge and smart-seeds farm advice to small-holder farmers. It upgrades the capacity of field staffs who enable farmers to adopt good quality seeds, farming practices, and implement new information service initiatives. Due to EWINDO’s model, the production cost of the farmers has reduced by at least 20%, and their income has increased by at least 20%.
