The Impact Goal

Banka BioLoo joined Business Call to Action in September 2015, and committed to the installation of bioloos for 300,000 BoP people across India; the company's innovative sanitation system across the country by 2020. Bioloos were also to be installed in 3,000 schools reaching an additional 120,000 girls. The company also estimated to create 94,000 local temporary jobs as a result of this expansion. All these targets were met, rather some exceeded; and the company commits to meeting the water, sanitation, and waste management needs of the future.
In 2021, Banka BioLoo renewed its membership and committed to provide accessible, affordable, and sustainable sanitation solutions for 6,000 low-income people in India and create 1,200 direct, full-time jobs through its supply chain by 2025.

The Market Gap

The shortage of sanitation facilities in India is a major concern. Nearly 600 million people, half of the country's population lacked access to adequate sanitation, which increases the risk of water contamination and diseases. According to the World Bank, diarrhea kills approximately 800,000 children under age five every year and leaves millions more malnourished and stunted. The absence of sanitation is especially acute in rural and peri-urban areas with its higher-than-average population density and lack of access to water and sewage infrastructure. This has been changing for the better, in the past few years.

The Business Solution

Banka BioLoo’s innovative solution is its biotechnology-based bio-toilets ‘bioloos’ that is budget-friendly and hassle-free for users. To address the need for a cheaper and easy-to-operate alternative to the traditional waste disposal system, treating the fecal waste at the source, with no need for transporting the waste, no contamination of environment or groundwater, no energy need in treatment, and no heavy infrastructure. These bio-toilets can be installed anywhere, without constraints of land type, terrain, or distance, and the system leaves pathogen-free water that can be re-used. The bio-toilet system disposes of fecal waste in a 100% eco-friendly manner that saves energy, conserves water, and produces biogas.
